This apartment is located in the historic center of Kyiv, in a building that once belonged to Orest Novytskyi, a professor and philosopher at Kyiv University. According to local stories, the building was designed by architect Oleksandr Beretti, who was a friend of Novytskyi. It is also known that the Ukrainian playwright Mykhailo Starytskyi rented an apartment here while working on translations of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales.
This fascinating history became the starting point of the project. Preserving the spirit of the building was an important goal, so together with the clients we decided to reveal the original materials hidden beneath years of renovation. Behind the old plaster, we discovered beautiful red brick walls, while the concrete columns were left in their natural state.
When the clients first approached me, they were convinced they wanted a loft-style apartment. As the project developed, however, they decided to soften the industrial character and create a warmer, more comfortable living environment. Since they naturally prefer classic interiors, this project became an interesting experiment for all of us.
The result is an eclectic interior that combines different styles, materials, and colors. Black metal, raw concrete, red and painted gray brick are balanced by the warm tones of natural oak. Cool blue accents are paired with muted shades of green and deep cherry tones, creating a unique and harmonious mix of textures and atmospheres.
